I am a servant of Tea. As a Neoillusionist Tea Master and Ceremonialist, my duty is to host and serve. Whenever, wherever, whoever drinks Tea, my heart instantly feels an obligation to serve. Even when someone is in the action of serving, my heart of serving doesn’t stop.
This time, however, I was a guest invited by Werner Morath, co-owner of Puerh Brooklyn, to attend their Japanese Tea Ceremony or Chanoyu. I was the only guest at this Chanoyu, as two other guests were unable to attend.
Upon my arrival, Ggrippo, co-owner of Pureh Brooklyn, greeted me like the wind, welcoming me downstairs to the Tea room.
The Tea room was in the union of quietness, I tried to minimize the sound of my heels on the stairs. Ta-da, ta-da, ta-da, I made my way downstairs, slowly and gently to the tune of my heartbeat.
Werner, greeted me warmly with gentleness in a beautiful kimono. He looked fresh and light, his eyes translucent, as if he had just bathed in heaven. From that moment on, I was transcended to a new time and place.
Waiting for me in the Tea room were two other Tea artists also in kimonos.
A woman with short hair and a kind face, who I later found out was Werner and Carlo’s teacher, Sensei Kukiko Mitani, greeted me graciously and invited me to sit next to the younger Tea Practitioner, Carlo Fong-Luy.
This was the my first time meeting Carlo and I felt his positive energy from the way he bowed. He gave a short introduction to the history of Japanese Tea Ceremony and its purpose.
Then Werner began the Art of preparing Tea.
Until this moment I’d had no idea that Werner practiced the Japanese Way of Tea. Although we have known each other for more than eight years, I have always discussed or shared Tea-related topics with Ggrippo.
And now, there he was, directly in front of me walking the Geisha steps, solemnly kneeling in front of the kettle with his absolute focus to perform his mission of Tea.
I was completely mesmerized by the beauty that took my entire presence.
I traveled through time and space, meditating in a space of no space, unburdened by the ease of desegregated eras of time.
I don’t know why — at that moment; it was as if I was in that story of the young Japanese samurai dueling with the old Tea master, and I was instantly awakened to how the old Tea master won the duel with his Tea utensils.
I care not about anything else in this moment, but am completely immersed with my whole being in the stillness of the movement, and the movement of stillness.
Werner deliberately opening the Tea canister, scooping the Tea, lifting the lid of the Teapot, pouring the hot water, whisking the Tea powder; every movement, every gesture, every vibration, all the sounds emanating from the movements of the consciousness were like a meditative symphony. Listen! The sound of that iron Teapot lid moving is like a cello, deep, mellow and grounding, yet serene.
I disappeared completely, into a new dimension.
Disappearing into a dimension of serenity and respect.
The movement of Tea making reflects the essence of the Tea maker.
This time, the essence of Tea was revealed through Werner right in front of my eyes. Or, more precisely, I felt the spirit of the samurai in Werner’s Tea Ceremony.
I felt his concentrated energy carrying the gravitational pull of the earth as he slowly focused on controlling his balance. Occasionally, there were a few movements he was in the process of practicing and refining, and aren’t we all in a process of refining? Not to mention the fact that Tea Ceremony is a lifelong practice. Werner’s sincerity and his humility give the moment a real sense of authenticity, which for me is a sacred expression of human beauty.
Sensei Kukiko Mitani sat to my left, and she gently and respectfully brought me the Wagashi-Youkan. The deep-red transparent, square shaped youkan lay silently in a green square banana leaf. The color and shape were very well matching and I admired the thinness of the banana leaf plate, the delicacy and softness of it boosted my awareness even more. The youkan was made of red bean paste with a big, fat, chestnut in the middle. I took a bite and it was delicious. My heart, my soul were well fed by the beauty of the Tea ceremony.
Now, the youkan fulfilled my flesh.
Soon, a bowl of Matcha was respectfully placed right in front of me.
A bowl of care.
A bowl of kung fu.
A bowl of joy.
I gracefully and discreetly lifted the bowl of tea with my two hands, the perfect warmth gripping both of my palms as if a glowing universe was between them. I inhaled deeply into the bowl of tea, the creamy freshness was like a milk-filled life force soothing the stress of my body and increasing my vitality.
What made the flavor of this bowl of Tea really delicious was the precious moment shared between these four Tea lovers who have all dedicated their lives to Tea. The presence of four fused together in the heartbeat of Tea, and I felt honored to savor all this in my all senses.
I felt the privilege of being a guest of Tea, the honor of enjoying this beauty, respect and tranquility. As the tea ceremony was almost over, and I was still a bit reluctant to leave, I candidly asked a question to the other three Tea practitioners;
“What is tea to you? Really, what is tea to you?”
I hope every Tea drinker finds this answer in their hearts, “What is Tea to you?”
For me, Tea is my profession, my religion, and my way of living.
Tea is the homeland where I was born and raised, it is the giver of my new self and new life. Without Tea,
I would not be who I am today. It is Tea that has saved my soul. Tea is my life’s mission.
“Tea reminds me of Japan.”…
Sensei Kukiko Mitani answered it nonchalantly.
It’s not the words she spoke that I want to praise — it’s the way she expressed herself; sincere and honest. I could feel the breath of her heart.
I ask this question to different Tea drinkers because I hope it can inspire or provoke them to experience the luxury of Tea with an awakened consciousness. “What is Tea to you?” is the question my sensei placed in me to ask my heart periodically as a Neoillusionist Tea Master.
Almost everyone answered with the words they have heard, analyzing the question through their mind to find the answer.
Few answered with their heart, this is why I was touched by such a simple yet heartfelt answer.
I remember asking this question to a Tea businessman 17 years ago, and he said, “Tea is business to me. I do Tea because I want to make money, and I want to make money with good people, so I chose Tea because people who are in Tea are often good people, and I want to be surrounded by good people. “
His answer made me give up my “silver rice bowl” job and start my own Tea journey.
Sensei Kukiko Mitani’s answer was straightforward, undecorated and simple, yet my heart was pumping and touched by it because it was truly from her heart. And to me, the beauty of the truth is beyond everything.
It is breathtaking.
Regardless what kind of Tea Ceremony we perform or enjoy, when Tea is prepared, felt, and savored with a sincere heart. When the presence of host and guest are one, the experience is sacred and solemn.
Arise! The identity of each individual character dances with wings of transcendence that halt and flow as presence of artist’s body. The color of the soul, like a mellow pomegranate in the break of sunlight, bursts forth from the brush as if out of the memory of a warrior’s leaping emotions. Aged mountain-gaze engages the home of life, which is the universe, each line cascading out the truth of life through the ink’s pneuma.
The “Image” of the Imageless World”- No.19 2017
Each work is calligraphy and painting; each work is a poem and a legend. They represent the struggles and joys, transformation and passion of Xiang Xiang’s life.
On Nov 10th, 2022, I was blessed to be enjoying Huang Xiang’s solo exhibition at the Saphira & Ventura Gallery. The gallery felt open and intimate. As soon as I entered, I saw Huang Xiang sitting next to a table among some guests, his left hand was holding one side of the brochure gently, his right hand signing his name on it slowly and carefully; he was busy to give personalized memories for any guests who are interested. He looked focused in a slightly strict way, and friendly in a playful way.
My first knowledge about the Artist, Huang Xiang, considered one of the greatest poets of 20th Century China, a Master Calligrapher and a Painter was at his poetry recitation in the Chinese American Art Council in Manhattan in 2016. He is regarded as a preeminent Post-Cultural Revolution poet of China; he appeared tender and gentle, he looked like he should stay home watching grandchildren play. Yet, when he opened his mouth, what spilled forth from his lips was hot blooded energy that made silent the entire space. I immediately felt his fire and his longing of life. From that moment on this artist’s passion injected to my blood and memory.
Two years later, I was invited to a group show by Ms. Zhang Ling, Huang Xiang’s beloved wife. Huang Xiang’s calligraphy work was there too, and I found the appearance of his calligraphy quite forward considering his generation. I know not to associate the art with the age of the artist but, from my experience of Chinese Calligraphy Art in the 20th century, it is generally more reserved due to the cultural environment. At the same time, deep down in my heart, I recognized in his work a kindred spirit – the spirit that desires to sing the liberty of the moment, and enthusiastically create the face of new tradition.
The “Image” of the Imageless World”- No.15 2017
At this time, gazing at the works throughout the gallery, each specimen is like a performance in an emotion-honored style, and the whole collection is like an album of music, made up of memorable performances from the past of Huang Xiang, as well as his present and future.
As my eyes followed the movement of the brush from character to character and from line to line, my perception of the characters are like birds in battlefields. Some were gracefully fighting with steadiness; some were losing feathers barely carrying the weight of pain; some were flying in the air spinning the heaven and earth, charging with the weight of a needle; some were like the moment of giving a birth, trembling on the ground.
The modern composition of the lines and shapes of the characters are in both random and choreographed design under Xiang’s consistent control of breath. A hidden frustration and captivity of sensations are subtly revealed in the inward energy of his turning hooks and rightward-falling strokes, as if his soul has been on its journey to home.
In traditional calligraphy, there is only black and white – ink and paper – to communicate and deliver the art of writing, but in most of Huang Xiang’s calligraphy work, he not only emphasizes the writing but also elevates the background through the brightness of color. The radiance of background palates and forms draws attention to eyes from a far distance, so the background also gives a forward impression. It indicates that both front and back, writing and painting, contemporary and traditional are equally important for the Artist.
The nature, or cosmos expressed in the background of the calligraphy is like a sanctuary or resort for the creator’s soul, where Huang Xiang’s life and poetry live, as well as his intimate contact with all things in the world. From another point of view, the background is like a well-designed stage, including his stamps, which are drawn in acrylic to a perfect size and given the matching color of the background as the “courtyard” of each stamp. Each seal adds more splendor to the work from an overall perspective. When viewed more closely, you will find that each seal has its own individual identity, which offers its own notable painting inside of the painting. This is also the uniqueness of Huang Xiang’s work: there is art inside of the art, paintings inside of the paintings, paintings in the poems, and poems in the paintings. Yes, the inscription of each of his works is his poetry, and the style and arrangement of each of his paintings and writings are full of poetic and picturesque atmospheres. On the background of the vibrant painting is the dance of soaring consciousness, like waves flowing slowly on the ocean, gently tumbling the world hidden in the seabed. The blend of thick and thin lines in his brush brings a pleasant and harmonious vision, and also gives the taste of the intersection of yin and yang, fullness and emptiness. There are also smooth emotional fluctuations that bring dynamic rhythm and undulating beauty to the lines of vertical characters.
I am drawn to Xiang’s most recent work. There is new breeze of youth in his 2022 work compared to 2017 and 2010, as well as a certain kind of calmness, ease and clarity manifested from his subconsciousness that also indicates the freedom of Xiang’s mind; Bright blues and greens are the predominant background colorations, his brushstrokes are lively and playful, neat and clean. This is a remarkable reflection of the 82-year-old Xiang’s rejuvenation, and at the same time reveals the vitality of the artist.
One of my favorite works is “Sixteen Lines For My Hometown”. The background of the painting is brilliant mantis green and aquatic blue. The green leaves represent life, floating in the bosom of the open sea, it depicts a lighthearted and joyful spirit with the authenticity of an innocent disposition. These symbols of life and nature also illustrate that the deep inner chamber in Huang Xiang’s soul is integrated with nature. Carefully observe, especially the fusion of emotions in his poems and writings. They reveal that his love for China is deeply rooted in his heart and his profound yearning for his homeland is as mentioned in his poem from “Sixteen Lines for My Hometown”.
Sixteen Lines for my Hometown. 2022
Especially the last part of the poem, “A drop of ink that never fades, a sentimental attachment that is immovable, a kind of feeling that can not be sent away, a high fever that won’t go away, a blood pressure that can not be lowered for a lifetime.” What I sense is Xiang’s inner self never givers up his desire of returning back to his root, as well as his passion, and pain of this burning desire in his heart. These deep affections and his surrender of the reality are expressed in the gravity of brush strokes and the circumscribed breath of the lines. In addition, the weight of the energy of each stroke is in contrast with the brightness and vitality of the background, giving a feeling of balance to the whole work.
What touched me was the brown stone brick house, waiting quietly in the tranquility at the bottom left of the artwork. As if it is the representation of Huang Xiang’s inner security, which is the homeland in his belief that has been always accompanying his soul even though he has devoted his whole life to democracy and wandering, yet there is a home in his spirit. The unique proportion and distribution brings a new taste to the oriental palate, and also endowed the western taste with easy-to-digest “delicacy”. I feel that this work best depicts Huang Xiang’s current state, busy in front of my eyes, lively and condensed.
“Preface -The Origins of the Universe” – No.1 2022 (2 pieces) are also among my favorites. Using Huang Xiang’s poems to describe, “It is the abstract and metaphysical thinking of human beings and the interstellar thinking of the human body in the 21st century.” These pieces are serried with calligraphy writing, characters upon characters are connected to each other as a oneness, yet each individual is its own life. The relationship between characters is like an electromagnetic field, which is arranged with variations of rhythmic permutations from beginning to end. It grants a richness of life to the calligraphy, as well as giving breath to the empty space in the presentation of fullness.

Preface- The Origins of the Universe- No.1 2022 (2 pieces)
The volume of energy dances with harmony, the smoothness of connection between coming and going like a sewing thread. The clarity flows in the veins of lines, and the dynamic movement breathes with a quietness, so there is no feeling of crowdedness, but a balanced and symmetrical breath and the movement of rhythm yielding to balance.
The consonance created in “The “Image” of the Imageless World-No.1 2017” was eye catching for me personally. The oneness between movement and stillness displayed in the open heart of the Artist, the combination of black and white brings a sense of uniformity in the combination of space and color, opening the gate of infinite imagination for viewers. It expresses not only the interlinkage and unity of yin and yang, breath and blood, but also the outlook on life that there is no difference between male and female, and black and white are equal.
The “Image” of the Imageless World”- No.1, 2017
In this work, you perceive the process of the movement of the ink, allowing you to see the appearance and disappearance of the void, which is the fullness sinking inside of the emptiness giving the work depth and dimension; and also showing how the emptiness of the space is infiltrated by the substance of the fullness. Exchanges of the thick and thin lines of characters on the background of blank space and ink painting also demonstrates the unity of yin and yang at another level. The peace of yin and yang, the mutual aid of hardness and softness, finally shows the face of the “Heart Sutra”: “Emptiness is form, form is emptiness, emptiness is not different from form, and form is not different from emptiness.”
As the famous Tang Dynasty (8th Century) Calligrapher, Calligraphy Theorist and renowned Art Historian, Chang Huai-Kuan said, “He who truly knows calligraphy only looks for its dynamic spirit, and does not notice the shape of the words.”
When the calligrapher follows the energy of the moment through his refined feelings and consciousness, what comes out is the dynamic spirit since energy is life itself. Therefore, the shapes of the words are naturally forged as the face of the calligrapher’s spirit. However, this following requires the freedom of spirit, the freedom of mind, the freedom of body. When a calligrapher lets go of everything, becomes fully open like a transparent glass tube, allowing the energy and feeling to come through guiding his hand to write, what is infused into his body is the energy of the universe, the power of God, and the breath of the spirit. What is written is the will of God, which can also be said to be the interpretation of Tao in calligraphy — it contains what calligraphy is supposed to reveal, the spirit, qi, bone, blood and flesh of calligraphy.
Hole of Light No. 1 2010
Hole of Light No. 2 2010
This calligraphy is called a masterpiece. So the structure and configuration of the writing is the spiritual outlook of the calligrapher themselves. As we say, “Calligraphy is human nature.” Therefore every dot and every line of a calligrapher exhibits the inner world of the calligrapher, and is a mirror that reflects the inner state of the calligrapher. It says the quality of calligraphy comes from the self-cultivation of the calligrapher himself.
Huang Xiang’s brush strokes are mostly light, postures are expressive without exaggeration, like grass dancing in the wind, lighthearted and strong. They contain the calligrapher’s light attitude towards life, as well as the restlessness of his struggles in life, his never-ending desire to return to his roots, and his occasionally unsettled presence. The energy of the strokes released are mostly inward, privately indicating Huang Xiang’s deepest longing for returning to his root; to the origin of his body and spirit; China — as well as the heaven, the earth and the cosmos.
My heart feels for what Huang Xiang went through as a fighter for Democracy and freedom of spirit. Coming from a Communist country and the feeling of being forced to pull yourself from your own root, then to float in between here and there, somewhere uncertain.
To be a calligrapher is to be a warrior of the prison break – to break the prison of any kind of limits, boundaries, blockages, old patterns, old thinking and performing. When I say old, I mean those things you discover that are not you – the ones that don’t belong to your higher self. That includes defensivenesses, doubt, regret, shame, wrongdoing, etc. The fact is, the more you break through, the taller you stand, the freer you are, more natural and elegant your calligraphy is.
Since the process of self knowing and self cultivation is never ending, this prison break always remains. There, the calligrapher continues to be a warrior of spiritual prison break. Your calligraphic refinement is in line with your personal refinement. Being a calligrapher is a lifelong process of self cultivation; and to be a calligrapher is to paint the process of your refinement like a piece of music. You are the conductor, the artwork is the symphony painted on paper.
The soaring wings in Huang Xiang’s works were sometimes halted and sometimes flow. His unique background, growth, experience, and the strictness of the pre-conditioned culture, society, and community were engraved in his subconscious since he was a child. However, Huang Xiang continues to break his own boundaries, displayed bountifully in this 2022 exhibition, which manifests a new level of transcendence. As a calligrapher, I have the honor to witness Huang Xiang’s exaltation as indeed, the Kindness of God.

“A Lifetime is a Promise to Keep” What a title!
Simple words, fulfilled with life and the joy of living.
In the breath we are taking, a beautiful promise to keep with you and me, with love and care, with time and life, with the world and entire universe.
“A Lifetime is a Promise to Keep” is a loving life invitation, it is a firm commitment that contains the delicate and deep emotions of the poet.
This also exhibits the poet’s character and style; his graciousness, directness, optimism, as well as meticulous observation and an extraordinary way of thinking.
Every day life is expressed in such way as that of a painting, giving the spirit of what it is to reveal the philosophy of life and the poet’s profound understanding of it.
In his writing,
Objects are humanized ,
Humanity is animation-like,
Sentiment is story-like,
Words are imagine-like,
Philosophy is simplified,
And described with multiple dimensions .
Read it with time,
Slowly chew and taste the taste of what it is .
Read three times and contemplate,
Because a Poem ;
A sentence is a poem
A paragraph is a poem
Poems are inside of the poem.
The reader travels through space and time in the open thoughts and new expressions of the poet. His distinguished perspectives revealed in the way of simplicity.
Perhaps at the beginning readers feel the writing is nothing rather special, yet, the poem slowly enters into your heart and gives you a new perspective of something you are very familiar with.
The poet touches hearts through the daily life we are living in, and readers receive beauty with surprises in the process of reading.
Taking your time to read is the key, because the true meaning of the words can be easily swallowed by unconsciousness .
There is no fancy language , but authentic, transparent and human verbiage .
Simple words rich in meaning, as if drinking a pot of a refined aged tea – after tasting it, the taste of it one never forgets.
While you are walking into the stories of poems, in a flash, one word or one sentence hooks your heart like fire, and reveals the philosophy of life for you to contemplate.
Many poets, in their way of writing, are very self-focused and self promoting , they talk more about themselves than anything else.
In Huang’s poems, he minimized himself to be as small as possible . Even though it is about his affections, he expresses them subtly and humbly.
Let’s enjoy the first poem:
Singing Solo
獨 唱
Who am I
I am the sole essence of a waterfall
A poem
Living forever apart from the crowd
My drifting song follows an itinerant
Dream
My only audience is
Silence
The poet’s separation, loss and loneliness are romantically colored.
The poem seems like a poem of sad emotion, however, after some thought, you see from the choices of words and way of expression, the meaning underneath is more about his Buddha practice of letting go, and the peace and freedom he found after letting go.
Poet Huang’s poems are the ‘ ring of light ‘ ring that shines and
energizes .
Let’s look at another poem:
Poets of the East 1. Qu Yuan
A simple act;
“Jumped into the Miluo River”, and yet behind it contains the history all Chinese know (One of the most important major traditional festivals – Dragon Boat’s Day – came from this very act of Qu Yuan’s ) , leading the reader back to history and to connect with nature.
“A model of immutability” describes the great impact of culture, new custom and glory and beauty from a simple act. Underneath the words, it describes what a moment really is, embodying present and future; and a moment has marvelous influences for the future.
Poets of the East
東方詩人
1. Qu Yuan
This man
Jumped into the Miluo River
And completed
A model of immutability
A moment of
Eternity
He set poetry in motion
In ever-widening circles
Of
Golden
Ripples
Today, at the conference and poetry recitation of Huang Xiang’s Poetry Collection, I particularly chose Writing Freely. Perhaps because we both are calligraphers , this poem directly touches the bottom of my heart, as if Poet Huang wrote it with my heart.
Writing Freely
性情書寫
A heavy
brush
in hand
is like
a big trailing
mop
walking
nakedly
across the spacious paper of life
footprints of thick ink
in swift strokes
some deep, some light along the way
one after the other
releasing
lightening rods
of semen and blood
The way poet Huang expressed the relationship between calligraphy and life is so precise.
He describes the Brush as the objects in life,
Paper as life itself,
So that everything we go through in life is the trance of calligraphy in ink.
A sincere heart produces a true life, it requires the transparency of one’s heat, like the nudity of a brush. It doesn’t matter if it is the person who holds the brush to write or the person who breathes to live, both require sincerity and transparency of really living. This means living without any attachment, without any hiding or pretending, to be transparent as a glass pipe, to walk and see through; so that the path of life can be seen as the spirit of ink in the transparency and sincerity of living.
What the ink writes is the word itself, but is also the blueprint of life and the trace of the going through.
What is releasing is the semen and blood of life, it is dance, it is spirit, it is calligraphy, it is life.
There is one more thing to highlight about the Poet – it is really amazing to witness his maturity and stability in his way of thinking. To experience his deep understanding of life and the youth of his heart through the great writing balanced between physical and spiritual, outer and inner substance from 1960s to 2006.
This is also perfectly expressed in his poem about himself:
In the space beyond space
Alone, I blossom like a child
I am crushed diamond
In every tiny piece a sun resides
Huang Xiang’s Poems are suitable for meditation. The simple language delivers light, power and passion, exhibiting the truth and dream-like nature of reality.
Here is my poem to conclude Huang’s poem through four ancient famous Chinese poets from three different dynasties: Li Bai, Gao Qi, Lu You, and Du Mu:
Love deep as a thousand feet of water
Sentiment as a point in one branch,
Miracle appears in the darkness
Fullness in the shade of green leaves.
Knowing the author of these two beautiful books 《望道與旅程》Chasing The Dao and Plantary Poetics, Jialu Mi, through his writing, his knowledge, contemplation, and wisdom indeed is a beautiful given.
Especially the opening of the book, his awaking ringed the bell of my heart.
So that I desire to share the song of the bell in my heart with you.
~~~ Review of the First chapter ~~~
Exiling, Returning home/homeland, and then Exiling and Returning home/homeland again, this is the process of decades of my growth, as well as the daily process of my day. The Author Jialu Mi united the meaning of Home/Homeland is not just birth place, but most importantly the root, the foundation, the origin, the true face, the most natural. So that the meaning of Exiling and Retuning is extraordinary significant, it embraces every level of reality.
As we know, when we experience the distance of something, we appreciate the existence of what it is much deeper.
My every year of returning home in China is like going back to my heart after exiling; not only that, every day of my living, the consciousness between sleep and awake is also my exiling and returning; and every moment of exhale and inhale as well as my another exiling and returning. Indeed, Life itself is between Exiling and Returning.
Professor Mi simply summed up my world in these two words, as well as the cycle of life, the cycle of living, civilization, culture, and society. In addition, we all are have our own going-home experiences and feelings, the title of “Exiling and Returning” touches the depth of hearts.
In this chapter, it says that whose who has intention to going home is awaking. So that whose who going back home is awaken people, and those who are on their way home, they are also on the Way of their lives. and the journey of returning is not just for a poet, but also for an artist, an unity, and a country. Exiling and Returning homeland is the process of being the Oneness.
Indeed, The process of Exiling and Returning leads us to our true self, to find our true face, not just the face parents gave, but the face God gave.
Returned-home-Poets are the one who have awaken, author used they as medium precisely indicated that every one else in the world is also Returning-home-people, awaken people.
And poet is only a symbol of all, their returning represents the cycle of Exiling and Returning of art, literature, learning, civilization, religion, science, society, nature, humanity.
Author described the exile as a homeless void state.
So that exile is the way to discover one’s self, as well as the discover of life. The process of discovery in the chapter described as a non-shield and inhumanity of the state of non-freedom. So that it is also the process of ones growth and development, the path of a spiritual practitioner.
I immediately realized that Home is the most important land in the world, and whoever leaves it, his or her future can not be built, and he or she will be lonely forever, because a tree without root can not survive.
So “bu gui lou kong – no returning, empty building”, empty in house, in heart, in life. As is a building without the base, heart floats without any purpose and certainty.
Especially in today’s xuanxiao shidai – the times of hustle and bustle, the modern life, the urban life, the technology life, the life packed with high frequency of multi-lays of noise, and the noise of artificial production, people can not hear their own inner voice, can not see the way of returning, and even the desire of their returning is swallowed by noises. People began to lose their way, lost themselves, and finally loss their life.
I betrayed my homeland, I left the soil of my hometown at the age of 16. I tried to avoid going home, everything there including a grass, a tree, a person, or anything you name it was just poor, I secretly swear that I would never stay in my hometown for my life, I thought there is no further. In fact, I felt my hometown made me feel small, and without any identity of who I am.
Later I have realized that was the behavior of my self-prejudice and self-disrespect.
Today, the yellow soil of my homeland is in my heart, in my breath, and every grass, every tree, every person, and every little thing becoming my beloved and teacher. I have learned that they are the source formed who I am. I am eager to know who I am because I desire be grow, and to become my true myself. Returning home is more like going to harvest the answers of ten million questions, it grants me great growth and knowledge. It is not just an experience of being close with my family members, but also to being close with my inner self, as well as my growth and future.
I have never appreciate and grateful for where I came from, my country, my home, my tradition, my culture as much now after the experience of my exiling and returning. The journey of exile allowed me to open my heart, to truly see myself, and accept my past, respect my past, and even protect my past. And it bestowed me a big secret of self-confidence, self-respect, and self-love.
Professor Mi expressed that “return to the past is the liberation of the future”, absolutely it is! It really speaks to my heart. And I was enlightened to receive a revelation from this particular quote, the closure of one’s inner self is the death of the presence.
Professor Mi also talked about the double missions of the returned-home-poets: to find a peaceful space for those who are lost; to find peaceful space for the returning of the spirit of the right timing.
As a artist, from the first mission I understood that as “you dao ke wang-there is a way to follow, means that the creation of an artist should satisfy and inspire the viewer and even guides the spirit of the viewer. The second mission I understood as the creation of artist is not only a light that illuminates and guides viewers to his or her path, but also gives absolutely clarity and certainty of the direction.
The analysis in the text pointed that or order to have a returned-poet to complete his double mission, he has to look the situation from the third perspective, even if himself plays the main role and going through difficulties with sufferings. He needs to detached from himself from the situation to see the truth of what it is. Which means without any distractions, without any attachment, letting go and be present, to create and write in the existence of non-self and non-action. So Professor Mi said, “Those who gives truth, and create a real self is a hero,” indeed, in order to create a new self you have to give yourself complete first.
Walking on the path of exiling and returning homeland is a necessary process of creating yourself. so I would like to say everyone is a hero of returning.
What Professor Mi said “creating a new self as equal as creating a whole new world, as God creates the universe” directly hit my being heartily. Yes! When our heart touches the soil of the homeland, it is the cleansing of our soul, the steps of our growth, the awakening of our spirit, is also an act of a hero, as well as a self-discovery, self-cultivation, self-innovation, and yet, a Rebirth.
So return home is to receive the perfection of fullness, a new birth, an infinite existence, also is the best learning and conscience/humanity.
When there is home to be returned means there is a way to Life, and each step of our life is our “Wangdao yu Lvcheng-Seeing the Way and journey”, and the process of from one side to the other side.
Now I suddenly realize, the name of “Jialu-the Way to home” has a profound meaning, Jialu is the one who has the Way.
The fiberoptic of heat rides thousands of horses running with one command,
From a foreign land to motherland.
There is no time to rest, no time to look around, no food to eat, no water to drink.
Except rolling in the waves of the breath of one commitment, all the way from south to north, arriving to the holy land of Delphic.
The heat keeps generating compassion in the thunderstorm of burning, mingles with the inner voice of illumination.
The signal of optic guides the way from cooling to boiling, from dark to bright, from a single to crows.
The point of attention pours the sweat of horses to the heart of heat, says, “infuse yourself with divineness, in the embrace of Delphic”. The heat expands, expands, expands to the fullness of substance, releases the perfume of honeydew, floats on the top of nose and pokes eyebrows.
The teat is brewed in the cup of divineness with the love of horses in the light of trance, please enjoy it.
Conclusion: The running horses are water, the water is love, Light from your higher-self and God; the fiberoptic of the heat is tea, the tea is lover, Light from your physical strength and certainty; the Delphic is cup, the cup is beloved, the Divineness; the trance is the inner voice of illumination and the point of attention, the awareness of love, constant attention, the golden mean of brewing.
It was used as the purpose of medicine since 2737 BC, and then for cooking.
In Tang Dynasty 618-907,
The name of tea was given,
Tea became the loyal drink for the highest, the monk, emperor, the official, the scholar, and then to everyone else in daily life,
And today, 21st Century, tea is the king of beverage.
Beyond being a beverage,
The life of tea is the life of life,
The way of tea is the way of living, the art of living.
In China, Tea is one of the most principal ritual in daily life, as important as salt and rice. There is an old saying, ” a man can live without meal but can not live without tea.”
Tea has been practiced for the purpose of a custom, hospitality, etiquette, self-cultivation, discipline, meditation, art form, and spiritual practice. The essence of the Way of Tea is the Unity of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.
From the non-existence of tea, time takes a tree to be a tea tree; a leaf from a tea tree be a tea leaf; a taste from a tea leaf be tea.
Without tea, there is no tea leaf
As if without life, there is no man.
Man and tea leaf are the non-being of life and tea.
So that tea leaf is us to reveal who we are, to live as who we are, so that we can say, yes, indeed, we are living.
And tea is the container that holds us, others, and beyond everything else we see and we know. Just like how life does.
You and me, as a tea leaf, it is tiny and so easy to be ignored, and yet it is delicate, and so easy to be damaged. But because of the value of tea leaf and each of them has to count on it to make the taste of tea. One tea leaf can not make a pot of tea, but one lb of tea leaves can definitely make pot of tea. We can not overlook any pieces because each of them represents each of us. That says, to make taste of life, we need others to compose as an unity to make it happen. So that, without guest there is no host, and where Tea Ceremony comes from?
You and me, like a tea leaf, small and delicate, may lost in any process of making, but as soon as we have our commitment of giving our taste, we can be very strong, we can be plucked from any situations, can be dry out from the sun, can be shaped from the heat, can be rolled by the speed, can be roasted by fire, can be steamed by temperature, can be sorted by selections, can be packed by box, can be transported to anywhere, can be steeped from the boiling, can be served on the table, can be tasted by hearts, and can be inspired by spirits……
Every step is necessary in order to become Tea and have the taste of tea.
As a living being, any situation we go through is necessary in order to become who we are and to taste the life itself.
We need to be strong like tea, in trust, there is no fear; in trust, we go forward, it doesn’t matter if our experience is fired, steamed, roasted, or boiled, our goal is to be here serve our taste to other beings for the existence of who we are. And that is the way we serve our existence and spirits.
The evidence and approval of our taste at last says, I am a tea leaf, I am bigger than any eyes can see, I am stronger than any minds can image, I am more flavorful than any tongues can taste, and I am loving just like How a beloved loves a lover, and yet, I am the spirit!
Tea Ceremony is not simply about drinking tea and having fun with friends.
It is about the Art of Living, the way to our higher self, of creating a perfect moment of peace and presence. It is a practice in consciousness to unfold the joy, beauty, grace, peace, and respect of each moment. It is a ceremony that elevates the simple art of drinking tea to a sacred level, where the host and the guests share a moment of worship and the Art of preparing and drinking tea together.
